This part two of the visit by Paul Joseph to the stunning La Bergerie, a rebuilt 17th century villa within the Terre Blanche Golf & Spa Resort
Making the most of the temperate climate in Southern France, La Bergerie was laid out for consummate outdoor living. A signature black 18 metre heated swimming pool is bordered by a pristine grass verge whilst a poolside terrace features a kitchen, high tech gas barbecue and large table for al fresco dining. Emboldened by the late afternoon sun, not to mention the pools heat absorbent black tiles, we recharged our batteries with a refreshing swim.
Before dinner, we explored the villas beautifully landscaped, three acre garden complete with lavender beds, a blossoming orchid of fruit trees and unobstructed views of the region. Adjoining the garden is a scenic lake backing on to one of the two 18 hole golf courses belonging to the Terre Blanche resort (La Bergerie guests can make use of all the resorts facilities, including tennis courts, a kids club and what is claimed to be Europes largest spa). Dinner that evening was enjoyed with Genevieve, a gregarious bon viveur whose presence added hugely to our weekend experience, before we retired to the drawing room with its oversized sofas and beautiful coffee table books for a night cap supplied from the wine cellar. Good intentioned plans to end the night with a movie in the downstairs cinema room were soon abandoned and we instead dragged our weary limbs to bed.
The following day, after our female contingent had enjoyed an obligatory trip to the spa, we ventured into Seillans, a regular fixture on lists of Frances most beautiful villages. With its cobbled streets dotted with ice cream shops, boutiques and cafés, it was certainly a trip worth making, but no tears were shed when we returned to our temporary home for a final evening of sumptuous living. It is perhaps the word home more than any other that encapsulates La Bergeries qualities. Because for all its opulent grandeur, it remains intimate and private, its tranquil and secluded setting making it the perfect holiday retreat. And as a getaway from the dreary British Isles, I would even go so far as to call it heaven.
La Bergerie is available for up to twelve guests at a rate of €40,000 per week for July and August, €32,000 per week for June and September, and €26,000 per week for the rest of the year. The rate includes a resident chef and two hostesses, plus daily housekeeping.
