British Secret Santas need not risk offending somebody or spend too much energy deliberating over a gift, as new research has revealed what the nation really wants for Christmas.
A survey of 1,000 UK adults carried out by e-tailer Christmas Tree World revealed the top ten secret Santa gifts that Brits would like to receive this Christmas, and found gift cards topped the poll with more than a quarter (26%) of the vote.
The tradition, which sees gifts exchanged anonymously amongst a group of friends, family or colleagues, has grown in popularity over the years but has been known to cause difficulty when choosing a gift and even lead to embarrassment or offence.
More than 1 in 5 (21%) respondents said they struggle to find Secret Santa gifts, 7% even said they have been offended by a Secret Santa gift they have received, while 1 in 10 has been embarrassed.
In second place was a food gift such as chocolate or a cheeseboard which secured 23% of the votes, followed closely by alcohol which came in third (21%).
Gifts for the home were also a popular choice, as 16% said would like to receive a candle for Secret Santa, while the same number would enjoy opening a novelty gift such as a stress ball or a game.
14% would like to unwrap a book and grooming products and cosmetics secured 12% of the vote.
Stationary came in eighth place (11%), and surprisingly 1 in 10 would like to receive socks this Christmas from their Secret Santa.
DVDs rounded off the top 10 (10%).
Despite these findings, more than 1 in 3 (35%) grateful Brits say they don’t mind what they receive for Secret Santa as it’s the thought that counts.
Stephen Evans, managing director at Christmas Tree World commented: “It’s great to the see that the tradition of Secret Santa is still a popular one, as it’s a great way for groups to have some fun without having to spend a lot of money and spread festive cheer.
“Despite Secret Santa being a light-hearted bit of fun, it’s clear to see that Britons would actually prefer to receive gifts that they will use, and want to avoid money being wasted on unwanted gifts.
“I’m sure the people who struggle to buy gifts will be pleased to see the results, as the findings are sure to make shopping for Secret Santas that bit easier”
