A luxury ground floor apartment in a converted tannery in London’s Bermondsey provided the perfect setting for prestigious British manufacturer Mark Taylor Design, who used their expertise to create an exquisite space that exceeded their client’s expectations.

Working with renowned Interior Designer, Caroline Senley, the owners were looking for a bespoke bookcase with a twist and briefed Mark Taylor Design with creating a unique design that would fulfil both of their requirements.

Now You See It, Now You Don’t: The Beauty of Bespoke Storage Solutions 3Managing Director Mark Taylor explains: “Our male client was keen to have a TV in the living area but his wife didn’t want it to be permanently visible.

We decided that the aesthetic would be best retained by housing the television in a secret swivel false front, hinged so that it can be pivoted, turning from bookshelves to television.”

Taking inspiration from traditional libraries with secret panelling and doors, Mark began designing the extraordinary unit, which would take centre-stage in the spacious living area while beautifully complementing the striking industrial-style windows.

“We were keen to retain the purity of the bookcase while at the same time incorporating the television in the room, to keep everyone happy,” continues Mark. “The floor-to-ceiling unit was very large and it was a challenge to design a hinging system that could take the weight of the books and television.”

“It’s a beautiful room and the bookcase adds to the warmth and richness of the environment. The inclusion of technology, disguised but ever present, is an element of surprise that the clients particularly enjoy,” Mark adds. “And it was an absolute pleasure working with Interior Designer Caroline Senley.”
