From the end of the High Line I walked up the West Side Highway to Pier 82, home of Circle LIne Cruises. You can catch a variety of boat tours here from the Beast speedboat to a gentle round-island cruise of Manhattan. I used my CityPASS ticket (www.nycgo.com) on a Landmark Cruise which took us all the way south to the tip of Manhattan and round up the East River under the Brooklyn and Manhattan bridges. A great way to see the city and also wave to my favourite Brooklyn restaurant, the Water Cafe situated almost under the Brooklyn Bridge.
I also enjoyed a fantastic Adirondack schooner sail (www.sail-NYC.com) – my birthday present – over to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. Being on the water on a sail-powered boat was so exciting – especially when we started to tack. This 80-foot white-hulled beauty is the fastest boat in New York harbour.
The Trump SoHo is an excellent choice for a SoHo/TriBeCa hotel with luxurious suites and superlative, jaw-dropping views of Manhattan you simply won’t get from any other hotel in the area.

My week-long trip to New York was a magical smorgasbord of some of the best hotels in the city, superb restaurants and visits to Manhattan’s many attractions. Due to the heatwave (at least for this Brit) I spent more time on the water; a great way to keep cool and see the city from a different vantage point. Yet whatever the season, the gloriousness that is New York makes it a superb year-round destination. Taking a bite out of the ever-juicy Big Apple is always a joy.
