The interiors of one of UK’s best located luxury hotels, London Marriott Hotel Park Lane, has undergone a complete transformation with a new interior design scheme for all 151 guestrooms including five new suites.

The laborious and meticulous work has been carried out by RPW Design. Luxurious Magazine took time out to have a chat with the interior designers about the transformation and got a sneak peek of the new building.

RPW’s role in the complete repositioning of the five-star hotel, which is housed within a Grade II listed property right in the heart of London’s Mayfair, encompassed the entire redesign of the lobby, bedrooms, executive lounge and meeting rooms. The extensive work took almost three years to complete and the building now looks very different from the 1769 private residential dwelling it once was.

Having said that, the London Marriott Hotel Park Lane’s sensitive makeover, has brought out some of the historic building’s more intimate character, with ‘townhouse’ inspired spaces. They bring a more residential feel and interventions such as replacing the traditional ‘counter’ style reception desk with two seated desks enabling the delivery of a more personal service. The two sets of stairs leading from the main entrance to the reception area, have also been replaced with a single central stairway and additional informal but far more luxurious seating. In fact, with so much attention to detail, it’s no surprise the complete refurbishment cost the owners £130 million pounds.

The new guestroom concept marks a departure from the traditional corporate hotel room design towards something that feels more like a high end ‘home from home’. The guestroom layouts all have entrance lobbies, thus improving the sense of arrival and the sense of space which has been enhanced by a soft pastel colour palette of white, dove grey and shades of lavender.

Materials such as leather, taupe silk, solid wood and marble have been used throughout so that the room exudes luxury and comfort. The living space, complete with gorgeous artwork, plump sofas and cushions, add to the homely feel. And all the fine detail is reflected in the cost of the refurbishment. The bedrooms alone cost £90,000 each to revamp.

The white and airy marble bathrooms further enhance the bedrooms, giving guests the feeling of an intimate and spacious spa-like space. A soak in one of the deep baths, is enough not to want to leave the bedroom at all. And the heated toilet seats are a little luxury in themselves. The bathrooms cost around £32,000 each as part of the overhaul.

The new design was initially trialled as a mock-up room and warmly received by brand representatives and guests from around the world including the Middle East, Russia and China. Their feedback suggesting minor design tweaks to be made were taken into consideration, and as a result has further enhanced the overall guest experience.

“The redesign of the London Marriott Hotel Park Lane has returned the interiors back in line with the exterior architecture, in some ways giving the building back to itself,” said RPW Design’s Ariane Steinbeck.

“We have brought out the hotel’s inherent townhouse ambience with elegantly designed rooms and public spaces which have all the facilities expected in a traditional five-star hotel. The new design has helped to create a far warmer and more intimate atmosphere than what existed.”
