Foodforthebrain.org and Innovate UK Pave the Way for Dementia Screening

A new initiative, born from Foodforthebrain.org and backed by Innovate UK, aims to revolutionise NHS dementia diagnosis, helping to identify those at risk years before symptoms appear. With over half a million diagnosed in the UK alone and the numbers rising rapidly, early detection is vital to prevent or delay the disease. Powered by data, innovation, and a commitment to inclusivity, this pioneering project offers hope for a healthier, more supportive future.

Foodforthebrain.org, the UK’s leading Alzheimer’s prevention charity, has been selected by Innovate UK to develop a pioneering test for the NHS that identifies individuals at risk of dementia long before symptoms emerge—offering new hope for prevention and personalised care.

Unlike the traditional approach—which often confirms dementia only after symptoms have become noticeable—this innovative test seeks to detect subtle markers of risk much earlier. Research shows that lifestyle and health changes can reduce the risk of developing dementia by up to 73%, making early detection vital.

Already taken by over 200,000 people, Foodforthebrain.org’s free online Cognitive Function Test stands out by accurately distinguishing between normal ageing and patterns of cognitive decline linked to future dementia risk. This empowers users with a clear understanding of their brain health and practical advice on how to protect it.

Striking data from the test reveal that cognitive function begins to decline steadily from the age of 18, with men experiencing a gradual decrease, while women see an accelerated decline from around age 50, coinciding with menopause.

The Cognitive Function Test is now being trialled in NHS memory clinics as part of the READ-OUT study, led by the University of Oxford and funded by Innovate UK’s Blood Biomarker Challenge. This two-year pilot aims to integrate smart digital testing into routine NHS care, while embracing diversity by including participants from varied ethnic and cultural backgrounds.

The urgency for such innovation is clear: as of December 2024, more than 500,000 people aged 65 and over in the UK have a formal dementia diagnosis—a record high—yet many remain undiagnosed, delaying access to vital support.

Dr Cynthia Bullock of Innovate UK explains, “Digital cognitive assessments have the potential to revolutionise dementia diagnosis, making it quicker, more accurate, and accessible to more people—improving outcomes while easing NHS pressures.”

Emma George, CEO of Foodforthebrain.org, shares this optimism: “Supported by Innovate UK, we are thrilled to validate our Cognitive Function Test in NHS settings, bringing us closer to a future where dementia prevention through brain health protection is part of everyday care.”
