frankstephenson Design Expands Automotive Vision with a Customised McLaren P1

frankstephenson Design, the design studio founded by automotive designer Frank Stephenson, has today announced a renewed and sharpened focus on the automotive world with a one-off customisation of a McLaren P1 hypercar for a U.S.-based customer.

Building on years of growth across design sectors, the studio is returning to its roots, unveiling a dedicated automotive design offering that spans bespoke commissions, limited-production vehicles, and full-service OEM support. This expansion is also supported by newly signed build locations in the UK and the UAE.

To mark this evolution, frankstephenson Design is launching a bold and symbolic project: a custom reinterpretation of the P1, one of Stephenson’s most iconic creations. More than a tribute, the new project highlights the studio’s approach to reimagining performance and design through a modern lens, exploring new possibilities with the P1 platform as the basis for the P1 EVO.

The design and build process will be documented in a dedicated video series coming to the frankstephenson Design YouTube channel, as well as Freddy ‘Tavarish’ Hernandez’s own YouTube channel, which reaches more than three million subscribers.

Frank Stephenson said, “This is a special moment for me – the continuation of a lifelong vision: turning bold, conceptual design projects into reality, where innovation and beauty are fused through a truly end-to-end creative process.

“To start with a customisation of the P1, a car that carries such personal and professional significance, is incredibly exciting. The P1 was a standout project in my career, and returning to it now, with the freedom to explore it from a fresh perspective, feels like a fitting way to reflect the creative direction of the studio.”

The P1 EVO customisation will serve as the foundation for the studio’s expanded capabilities in the mobility sector, offering tailor-made solutions for private clients, collectors, start-ups, and established original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) alike. From one-off builds to low-volume runs, the studio is now fully open for business in the automotive space.

Several additional automotive and motorcycle design programmes are already in development and will be revealed in 2025 and beyond.

The P1 EVO project is currently in its early design phase, with development and refinement continuing, driven by ongoing testing. High-quality modelling and prototyping are scheduled to begin this summer, with potential build locations in both Florida and the UK. Testing of the final vehicle is planned for notable performance venues, with an events calendar ramping up from 2026.

Freddy ‘Tavarish’ Hernandez added, “This project is an exciting opportunity to work with frankstephenson Design on something truly unique. The P1 EVO represents a fresh take on an already incredible car, blending creativity, design heritage, and modern thinking. I’m proud to be part of a build that reflects the studio’s vision and can’t wait to share the journey with the world.”

This renewed direction comes at a pivotal moment in frankstephenson Design’s evolution, reaffirming the brand’s return to its automotive roots and its reputation for blending biomimicry-inspired beauty with boundary-pushing engineering.
