A Time And A Plaice For Galvin At The Athenaeum Hotel

One of the mains at the Galvin At The Athenaeum Hotel

For the mains, there are seven possibilities to tuck into, with something to suit most tastes, whether it’s seafood, pasta, fish or meat.

Brixham plaice from Devon at the Galvin At The Athenaeum Hotel

I went for two pieces of moist and flavoursome Brixham plaice from Devon (£22.50), which was kindly taken off the bone by the team of chefs. It was garnished with a nice lemon sauce, a smothering of capers, and some spiced croutons, which were quite sweet on the palate, thereby making it an interesting addition to the dish.

Being a carnivore, my wife decided on the impressive sliced medium to well done Welsh Gower Salt Marsh lamb (£26.50) that was finished with small coriander leaves. As neither of the mains came with any sides, we furnished our plates with boiled potatoes and purple sprouting broccoli priced at £4.50 each.

As the meal was nicely paced, with no feeling of being rushed, we had enough time to enjoy the Galvin experience and to chat to the staff who were extremely attentive throughout our time at the restaurant.

Dessert at the Galvin At The Athenaeum Hotel

After a quick natter, we were shown the dessert menu, which is always tempting, even when you have eaten well. At Galvin, there’s five delicacies to tempt the stomach. Being a fan of Tarte Tatin, it was an easy decision for me, and it won ahead of the cheese platter, and the strawberries with granola and meringue. Costing £8.50, I was not disappointed, and it was by far my favourite dish of the day.

The cream was infused with something alcoholic and the tart was so soft to touch and really reminded you of being in France. I was in culinary heaven! My other half closed her meal with scoops of passion fruit and raspberry sorbet (£7.50) and a selection of fresh fruit.
