The Chester Residence in Edinburgh

The low-down
Ultra-luxe self-catered apartments set in a well-heeled residential area near Haymarket station. The Residence is repeatedly ranked no.1 on TripAdvisor for Edinburgh hotels and has won countless awards. A Guide to Some of Edinburgh’s Best Hidden Gem Hotels 3Expect the personalised service of a boutique hotel with all the freedom that having your own plush pad brings. There are 23 individually designed apartments to choose from, including penthouse and mews residencies.

What makes it special?
You can live like an affluent local and be looked after like a VIP. Staying at the Chester Residence gives a taste of what it’s like to own an opulent Georgian townhouse. The Residence is set away from the hustle and bustle of the city so you can enjoy some peace and quiet, though the city’s best shops, bars and restaurants are just a stroll away.

Service goes the extra mile. Special occasions are taken note of and there are plenty of add-ons to personalise your stay – from champagne and strawberries on arrival to in-house spa treatments. The basics can also be covered, like the option to get a food shop delivered shop before you arrive.

The reception is manned 24/7 and surprisingly quick to respond. Our hot water broke one morning and an engineer arrived at our apartment and had it fixed in under 20 minutes.

Décor & rooms
The apartments boast floor-to-ceiling opulence. Think cinema-style HD TVs, Molton-Brown toiletries, fluffy robes, premium bed linen and wrap-around sofas with enough room for an entire family circle. State-of-the-art kitchens (which the hotel keep immaculate) will leave you wanting to cook in.

Dining

A Guide to Some of Edinburgh’s Best Hidden Gem Hotels 4Though there’s no formal restaurant, there is the option to add food and drink packages to your stay. The Residence does have it’s own cocktail lounge, though I can’t image why you’d want to leave the lavishness of your apartment.

I highly recommend booking breakfast, at least once. The Continental Breakfast is a must-try. You get a generous serving of cheeses and cured meats – far too much for two people – as well as toast, croissants, jams, fresh fruit and freshly squeezed juice. The portion was so large that we had enough left for lunch. Enjoying a relaxed breakfast from the comfort of our apartment was one of the highlights of our stay.

Things to do
Haymarket is your closest station, and Princes Street and the West End are within walking distance. Edinburgh’s famous Gin Distillery is close-by and well worth a visit. Their expert bartenders will happily take you on gin tasting discovery lesson, all for the love of the spirit.
