Fergus Style Punta Arabi recently opened in the heart of Es Canar, Ibiza, featuring white-washed villas and smooth archways while retaining its bohemian spirit. Amongst the hotel’s highlights is the iconic Punta Arabi Hippy Market, located on the hotel’s grounds. The market allows guests to discover a wide variety of artisanal crafts, treat their taste buds to local food, listen to live music, and experience the island’s colourful and bohemian atmosphere and traditions.
History of the Market
The Punta Arabi Hippy Market was founded in 1973, making it the oldest in Ibiza. It has evolved into a cultural beacon for free spirits over the generations, with its motto of ‘Peace and Love’. As a haven for creativity and community, the market has long attracted those with similar values.
It began with just five stalls and casual jam sessions and has since evolved into one of Ibiza’s most prominent attractions, becoming today the island’s largest market.
Despite this growth, the market hasn’t lost its original, intimate feeling and prioritises fostering a family atmosphere amongst vendors and visitors alike. Every Wednesday from 10 am – 7 pm, Es Canar is taken over by the lively energy of marketgoers, sellers, and performers.
Friends & Artisans
With an open and welcoming atmosphere, the Hippy Market caters to guests of all ages, tastes, and styles. Since 2013, the market has had a designated children’s area with crafts and face painting to allow parents to enjoy the market knowing their children are in trusted hands.
With over 400 stalls filled with handmade items from local sellers, there is something for everyone to discover, from clothing and jewellery to ceramics and crystals.
The market has hosted a diverse array of vendors over the years, with some who have been selling since the early days and others who have joined more recently. Long-standing vendors include Francesca, who has sold her organic fibre hats since 1987, and Gustavo, whose variety of crafts, including magnets, posters, and stickers made from recycled goods, have been sold at the market since 1975.
Juan Sebastián started selling silver goods, specialising in crowns, in 2014, a newer addition to the market. Vendors come and go, but the draw of the Hippy Market remains constant through time.
A Vibrant Community
Fergus Style Punta Arabi hosts the legendary market on its grounds and hopes to build on the vibrant energy of the market, continuing to revive the Bohemian spirit of Ibiza.
The Hippy Bar, located in the hotel’s central square, spills into the market, inviting guests, locals, and visitors alike to enjoy handcrafted cocktails while listening to the live music of the market.
The collaboration between Fergus Style Punta Arabi and the Hippy Market highlights the hotel’s commitment to supporting the local community while honouring the rich culture and history of the iconic market.
