Five Science-Backed Products To Help Improve Your Sleep

The Gravity Blanket

The Gravity Blanket

Weighted blankets are the latest wellbeing craze. The science behind these blankets is that, using added weight (usually microbeads or pellets) they relax your nervous system through the feeling of being hugged. At the very least, they’ve been proven to provide a sense of security and for some, can even reduce stress and anxiety to aid sleep. That’s because they can increase happy hormones (serotonin) and lower stress hormones (cortisol) which in turn, boosts melatonin levels – the hormones that make us feel sleepy. The added weight means you move less during the night too.

Excited by all of this insight, I ordered a Gravity Blanket – one of the most popular brands. Their blankets are lovingly handmade to your specifications. It’s recommended that you use a blanket weighing 10% of your bodyweight, though you can go heavier or lighter if you feel you need to.

I love the design of the Gravity Blanket. It’s luxurious and scandi-inspired, and looks fabulous in my bedroom or as a sofa throw. Careful stitching helps make sure the weight (the microbeads) are distributed evenly, so you won’t have any issues there either.

The added weight does take some getting used to, so it’s best to ease yourself in over a period of time, though it only took me a few nights. It’s also best used for one person only as I found it falling off the bed during the night when I shared it with my partner.

So, does it actually work?

Research is mixed as there are still some users claiming the improvements are down to a placebo effect.

It certainly gets the thumbs-up from me. I noticed the benefits from day one. The first night I used it I slept for a solid seven hours after quite a few restless evenings. It’s also now my go-to when I’m relaxing on the sofa, it makes me feel more chilled and I’ve drifted off underneath it plenty of times.

The Gravity Blanket has technically improved my sleep and I’ve got a gorgeous new home accessory, and that’s more than enough to win me over.
