Held in a spacious and rambling bungalow in the exclusive residential enclave of Damansara Heights in Kuala Lumpur, Alia Bastamam presented her Raya 2019 collection to a bevvy of socialites and celebrities who happen to also be her most steadfast clientele.
Inspired by the night and its wildflowers, the jewel-toned coloured collection wowed the lucky guests who were treated to a lavish high tea in one of the rooms of the house which also happens to be her atelier and showroom. Cakes, scones, sandwiches and savoury titbits including the mouth-watering salted egg yolk eclairs by Dotty’s was served with tea and was the perfect accompaniment to the Malaysian designer’s sleek and beautifully draped long dresses and gowns.
Clean lines, sensual silhouettes and luscious materials like liquid satin were embellished with feminine touches of lace, beading and subtle floral prints, making this Raya Collection which was from both the Ready-to-wear and Atelier collection, both glamorous for day and night.
Accessorising the outfit was jewellery from ZCOVA, a Malaysia jeweller known for their modern take on diamond and gemstone jewellery. The pieces worn by the models were a collaboration between Alia and ZCOVA specially created to complement this Raya Collection.
The Baju Kurung, a traditional Malay dress was interpreted in a totally contemporary and modern way as only Alia knows how, making the outfits wearable and practical for all races and all occasions. Like stars in the sky, the swish of the silky fabrics provides the ideal backdrop not unlike a velvety night sky while flowery prints of cherry blossom and wisteria and the intricate sequins and beading glitter like the Orion constellation.
“When this story idea came up, it was perfect for my design philosophy – designing for all women,” says Alia. “I created a collection which begins subtly, and as the collection progresses, so do the designs. I understand my clientele because I have days when I want to dress simply and other days when I want to be a little more extravagant…. and that is what I hope this collection offers.”
