Simon Wittenberg takes a look at the new Peatheart Batch 2 expression from the Knockdhu Distillery in Scotland.

Following in the footsteps of the highly-acclaimed Peatheart Batch 1 that was launched in 2017, Peatheart Batch 2 is the latest release to be added to the anCnoc Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky line-up for the global market.

After a limited quantity went on sale in Sweden, this second bottling (46% ABV) is now available to drinkers around the world and boasts the same smoky, mellow wood notes and phenol content as its predecessor (40 parts per million or ppm). However, on this occasion, the subtle smokiness is balanced with anCnoc’s brighter and fruitier flavours.

A product of the Knockdhu Distillery, which sits in the shadow of the ‘Black Hill’ (Knockdhu in Gaelic) in Aberdeenshire, Peatheart is made using peated barley to add a rich, smoky twist to anCnoc’s classic new make spirit, before maturing in ex-bourbon American Oak barrels.

Peatheart Batch 2, which is presented in a stylish matt black bottle and tube with a striking golden eagle motif, has a natural light gold colour. On the nose, there are ripe pineapple, pears and toffee apples. The taste is rich and smoky with a light sweetness and undertones of a hay barn. Whisky lovers are equally treated to a long, spicy and sweet finish coupled with a smoky finale.

Gordon Bruce, Knockdhu’s Distillery Manager, explains that, despite having the same ppm as Batch 1, slight variations in maturation mean that the second Peatheart bottling offers something a little bit different, with a more refined smoky character. The combination of fresh, fruity anCnoc notes with more mellow peat flavours has resulted in a wonderful modern whisky that will be enjoyed by whisky fans across the spectrum.
