Boho Baltazár Budapest

The low-down
Tucked away down a cutesy cobbled street, the 11-room family-run Baltazár is a true boutique retreat. Located in Old Town, this little-known hotel sports ultra-trendy décor with a scarlet red colour scheme. The service is warm and welcoming with a personal touch. It’s the perfect place to escape the crowds and explore the city’s historical Buda side.

Rooms and suites
Like the rest of the hotel, the rooms and suites are bursting with character. Each space has been individually designed to be homely and a little bit hipster. Think feature lighting, designer furniture, modern artwork and quirky knick-knacks. Everything you need is there, plus some cool (chargeable) extras if you feel like a treat, such as a face mask.

Dining
Even if you’re not staying over, Baltazár Grill is well worth a trip over the Chain Bridge. It’s one of my top 3 in the city. So I wasn’t surprised to learn the hotel is owned by the city’s most successful restaurateurs; the Zsidai family.

The dishes are a modern celebration of Hungarian food and is one of Budapest’s only to cook with the Josper grill. Ingredients are carefully sourced and portions are hearty. The Chicken Paprikash is a must-try. The chicken has been specially bred for the restaurant on a nearby farm and is beautifully tender. It’s served in a stew with heaps of buttery dumplings and a dollop of sour cream. If you’re after something British, order the burger but try not to drool as the slow-aged beef falls apart in your hands.

There’s an enormous wine list (over 200 bottles) but be sure to try a glass of fresh, zingy homemade lemonade that Budapest is famous for. The dining room is a hidden gem, with a backlit vaulted ceiling, funky filament light bulbs and cave paintings on the walls.

Things to do
There’s no spa or gym since it’s a boutique hotel but you won’t be short of things to do in the Castle District.

Buda Castle, Matthias Church, the National Gallery and a walk up Gellért Hill to the Liberty Statue should all be on your to-do list.
