A very unique experience – your own alpine courtesy of the magnificent Grand Hotel Kronenhof.

The Grand Hotel Kronenhof, Pontresina is one of those architectural marvels that makes you stop and stare, a property that seems to have been lifted straight from the movie the Sound of Music. Aesthetically pleasing, symmetrical and a property that you know will be just as impressive and luxurious on the inside as it is on the outside.

In 1848 when Andreas Gredig bought the Pontresina based restaurant “zum Rössli” extended it and named it the “Grand Hotel Kronenhof and Bellavista”, who would have thought that the horseshoe-shaped property would result in the magnificence you see today. For almost 150 years, the Gredig family owned the hotel before selling it to a group of Swiss private investors. The investors didn’t sit upon their laurels, making major improvements through investment, resulting in the property we all marvel at today.

The Grand Hotel Kronenhof offers guests a wide range of luxurious accommodation and caters for both adults and children with the addition of the Krönchen Club, a supervised kindergarten offering a wide range of activities to keep your young ones occupied while you enjoy the property and its surroundings. This summer, Grand Hotel Kronenhof has added an extra special experience – spend the day at your own private Alpine Hut, a unique opportunity to spend some quality time together far from the madding crowds, with your own private chef as an added bonus.

The alpine hut is situated high up in the mountains, 10 kilometers from the main hotel and near to the Bernina Pass. The hut offers a chance for families and couples to get back to nature with unspoilt wild pastures surrounding you, hills, flowers and the chance to replicate something similar to the iconic scene where Julie Andrews runs and spins arms aloft through natures beauty.

Transfers are included in special Alpine Hut package coupled with a wonderful rustic three-course meal prepared by the hotels Executive Chef, Bernd Schützelhofer. Bernd is no everyday Chef as as he became the Chef of the Year 2012, an accolade awarded from the Swiss economic magazine Bilanz.

Beautiful surroundings, peace quiet and a decorated chef, what more could one want? Should you feel in the mood, you can even accompany the Chef to the markets, learning more about the local produce and the best ways to prepare and cook it.

The Alpine Hut package is valid for a minimum of two people, and for those a little more adventurous, there is the opportunity to spend the night in the hut, further details can be obtained by contacting the hotel direct. For us the choice is simple, beautiful hotel filled with luxurious suites or a night in the Alpine Hut, we think a day trip with nature, coupled with a evening in the hotel is more our ‘Cup of Tea’.

The Engadine valley, where the Grand Hotel Kronenhof, Pontresina is located, has a wide range of  outdoor activities on offer suitable for families with children of all ages. There are mountains to be climbed, mountain bike trails to be discovered, lakes in which to swim or on which to sail, excursions by train, horse-drawn carriage, boat or helicopter, and child-friendly centres such as a petting zoo and rope park.
