Leanne Kelsall reviews the Matthew Curtis in-room hair styling service at the prestigious Rosewood London.

The ultra-luxury Rosewood London needs little introduction. So when I was offered the chance to try their new in-room hair styling service, I didn’t think twice before saying yes.

The indulgent new service was launched late last year, at the same time as the hotel salon from multi award-winning hairdresser Matthew Curtis.

The independent salon sits on the lower floor of Rosewood adjoining the Sense Spa. Its quirky design is inspired by the Orient Express and the decadence of high living. Guests and non-guests can book in to have their hair coloured, cut or styled by the master himself or by their pick of stylist from the highly talented team.

My in-room experience started with a phone call from my butler. He asks questions about your hair and sends up the best shampoo and conditioner. You can wash your hair in the comfort of your room or suite, or head downstairs and have the salon wash it for you.

Next, your entourage arrives. I say ‘entourage’ because they’re all here for you. Several butlers, along with my hairdresser arrived with a gorgeous leather styling trunk. In-keeping with the salon’s décor, it’s designed around a vintage steamer trunk and equipped with all the essentials a hairdresser needs.

While the butlers took care of the setup, another prepared me a drink, which was a perfectly-chilled glass of champagne. (Talk about VIP.)

I sat down for a relaxed chat with my stylist Shanola. I asked her about the sort of clientele who use the service, which, it transpires, ranges from Dubai princesses needing privacy to hen parties wishing to be pampered.

Shanola worked her magic, turning my lifeless mane into sleek and sophisticated tresses. She explained that one of her most loyal clients won’t let anyone else blow-dry her hair. It doesn’t take long for me to understand why, as she skillfully styles mine into beautiful waves.

And what an experience. There was no rushing around, no awkward chit chat and thankfully and no hair-ridden cups of tea. I started to wonder how I’ll ever go back to having my hair cut at a salon. The service felt fun and relaxed with a sense of exclusivity. A theme that runs throughout Rosewood.
