Former World Champion Chef, Ørjan Johannesen, has decided to share his extensive culinary knowledge and prowess by opening a Food Academy and hotel. The new premises are located at Austevoll Island near Bergen, and from here, Ørjan and his team will be entertaining guests from a stunningly beautiful location.

Beckerwyc House opened on June 16 and sits on the hillside by Bekkjarvik Harbour in Austevoll, south of Bergen. In addition to the first-class food on offer, the property also boasts some magnificent views of the fjord, mountain peaks of Sunnhordland and harbour.

To ensure guests have enough time to enjoy extraordinary cuisine and the natural surroundings, the newly opened hotel section has twenty rooms and suites, with ten patios.

Ørjan Johannessen, who brought his mentor Odd Ivar Solvold with him to run the food concept of Beckerwyc House, said, “The dedication and feelings regarding precision and taste is something that I have been longing for, and is something that can now be achieved through our new restaurant Mirabelle, where local ingredients from our island Austevoll is in centre of attention.

We will work hard every single day to create unique dining experiences for our guests through carefully planned service and menu.”

The stylish building was designed by Ajas Mellbye and incorporates many local features, including a facade that resembles a fish hatchery and rock formations. Sol Design was commissioned to create the right ambience, and they have achieved this by choosing colours and shapes from nature and the sea.

Rønnaug Nymark, the CEO of Beckerwyc House, said, “In Bekkjarvik, there has been an accommodation business since the 17th century.

With our feet firmly planted in history, we are now taking a big and important step into the future. Bekckerwyc House will appeal to food fans who travel for fantastic food and for people who want to find peace and experience the destination Austevoll with its wide range of activities. At the same time, we are very excited about strengthening our overall offerings to both local, national and international travellers.”

Ørjan added, “The food cathedral on the hotel’s top floor will provide room for a variety of food and drink experiences, which are given considerable attention in Beckerwyc House. The academy aims to increase food skills by offering food courses for private individuals and businesses, digital food courses via streaming, and competence for our industry.”

“I am looking forward to starting a new culinary journey with high ambitions, together with our eminent team and family”, said Ørjan.

However, we’ll leave the final words to Ørjan’s mother, Asta, who said, “For me, it is a great pleasure to see that together as a family, we can create new and ambitious projects and that the next generation has found its natural place in the family business. It confirms that what we do is viable.”
