When you’re craving space at ground level, the best thing is to get away from it all and head to a rooftop bar because the ambience and the views from an elevated height take you into a whole new world. If you want to put your head above all the chaos, somewhere you can do this in London is The Rooftop at the Trafalgar St James Hotel.

Whether you’re a tourist or not, you really couldn’t wish for a more central location than the heart of Trafalgar Square. Just moments from Charing Cross or Leicester Square underground stations, it’s slap bang in the middle of the capital’s major sights.

To plan your sightseeing expedition, the aptly named The Rooftop provides the perfect place to mark them out on a mega realistic Google Map.

This smart, all-weather, south-facing alfresco bar and kitchen is a rendezvous that can be accessed by a lift from within the hotel. Levelling up on floor seven, you will feel like a whole new world has opened up.

The Instagram-worthy views of the Trafalgar Square below and the capital’s skyline beyond. The venue is worthy of praise from both tourists and Londoners alike.

Drinks are key here; which you can sip from either a high table, cushion-strewn banquettes or a view-facing bar and chairs.

The bar has teamed up with a Provence winery, Château d’Esclans, for the ultimate summer escape by decorating it in a pink floral space. The Rooftop’s Whispering Angel Terrace is gorgeous and brings about brightness even on cloudy days.

To match the décor, the drinks menu boasts carefully curated cocktails using the rose made from Grenache, Cinsault and Vermentino. To give you a flavour, the Taste of Provence (£16) is made up of homemade lavender syrup, a touch of soda water and fresh notes of the good stuff.

If you’re a fan of fruitier cocktails, I’d suggest giving the Angel’s Secret (£16) a whirl. But hurry, the pop-up is only around until the end of September.

There is a whole bunch of bar snacks and other dishes on offer, too – some of which come larger than you’d expect. While the food is nothing to rave about, the European-inspired dining does a good job of filling you up so you can gaze at iconic landmarks such as The Shard and the London Eye.

But this intimate place really comes alive at sunset when the city’s buildings begin to shimmer against the skyline. Coupled with toe-tapping music, you’ll feel transported to a holiday spot with an exclusive feel.

While the food and drinks might come on the pricier side, you can’t place a price on magnificent views and experience. Nothing beats feeling like you’re on top of the world, and you can share that feeling with click-happy moments from this Rooftop, which is undoubtedly The Trafalgar St James Hotel’s crowning glory.
