Simon Wittenberg takes a look at the release of Tobermory’s 23-Year-Old Oloroso Cask Finish single malt whisky.

Tobermory, the Isle of Mull’s only whisky distillery, and one of the oldest commercial whisky producers in Scotland have unveiled its new 23-Year-Old Oloroso Cask Finish single malt.

Priced at £320 per bottle, and with an ABV of 46.3%, it will join the artisan Hebridean Distiller’s core range, namely the Tobermory 12-Year-Old, the Ledaig 10-Year-Old and the Ledaig 18-Year-Old.

The latest release, which will be available in Europe, Asia and the UK, has spent more time resting in the finest Oloroso casks at the distillery than its revered 15-Year-Old; resulting in an even more exquisite and full-flavoured whisky. The deep rose-gold sherried 23-Year-Old features unique notes of vanilla, ripe oranges, toasted barley and fruitcake on the nose.

With the sherry influence evident on the palate, salted toffee, candied citrus and floral honey are also present, and all are bound together by caramelised walnuts and a subtle salty finish.

A time for celebration
To commemorate its time on the Isle of Mull, the Tobermory Distillery has collaborated with another of the island’s long-established businesses, Mull Silver and Goldsmith, for a one-of-a-kind gold and sterling silver quaich, which will be heading to auction along with the new bottle over the coming months.

Silver is a traditional 23rd-anniversary gift, and the gold coating signifies the deep liquid-gold of the 23-Year-Old. The funds raised will be donated to The BEN, a Scottish hospitality charity that is seeing greater demand for their services as a result of COVID-19.

Julieann Fernandez, Master Blender at Tobermory Distillery, explained that the brand is incredibly proud to be introducing an exciting addition to the core range (i.e. the 23-Year-Old). He also said that the Island of Mull is a remarkable melting pot of artistry and creativity, and the one-off silver quaich is a visualisation of the expert craftsmanship and care that goes into the exceptional spirit that has been released.
