Getting there
Clearly, for such a regal weekend, a royal carriage would suit. We got there in the Bentley Continental GT V8 S Convertible, a magnificent combination of refined power and turbo-charged opulence.
Inside its spacious cabin is a world uncapped luxury; hand cross-stitched seats, carbon fibre and real leather, digital TV and a Wi-Fi hotspot – even the floor mats are deep-pile. This is a place you don’t really want to leave and cruising down, well, any road, in fact, is smooth, quiet (double-glazing) and ultra-comfortable. It was like riding a royal armchair all the way to Windsor.
At the same time, for the more adrenaline-fueled luxury hunters among us, under the bonnet is something of equal beauty; a stunning, snarling twin-turbocharged V8 engine. It’ll launch the car right the way through to 191mph if you were to let it, passing 60mph in just 4.1 seconds. With big, fat 21” wheels and sports suspension, it’ll munch up all the corners you can muster – and with sheer glee too. And then there’s all the thrill and drama of roof-down driving, its screaming V8 loud and satisfying as you squeeze the throttle.
Overall, it’s a fantastic option for those who want luxury, easy-going motorway cruising one minute and naughty, racy agility in the twisties the next. Which, by the way, the roads to Windsor are a great mix of.
