Diwali, the Indian festival of lights to signify victory of light over darkness, is a jubilant time for full-on celebration with fireworks, family and food

This year, it falls on 30th October and what better way to enjoy it than with a spicy feast at easy-eaterie, Daawat.

Located within the Strand Palace Hotel in London’s Covent Garden, Daawat is also ideal for Theatreland goers who wish to embrace Diwali but are in need of a speedy set menu.

Met with our suspect eyes and traditionally ingrained Indian taste buds, the food at Daawat is surprisingly good. Asharaf Valappil is the head chef behind the restaurant’s individual flair. Inspired by the diverse regions, you’ll find both authentic flavours and a modern fusion twist on classic favourites.

Our best dishes are the kozi rasam – a deliciously warming spiced dahl cooked with chicken broth and served with a moreish piece of paneer stuffed paratha bread, Grandma Kodi Kura – Andhra-style chicken curry based on a secret family recipe and a crunchy spinach and kale chaat.

Fiery chilli mili chicken wings and masala uttapam (a south Indian-style pancake) with lamb pepper fry, tiger prawns cooked in a mild coconut curry and a chunk of tandoori paneer in a smooth saag (spinach) total up the varied savoury part of the menu.

No meal would be complete without a few sides and so Deewat includes familiar crispy and light fresh buttered naan bread, saffron rice, makhani dahl and a dry potato curry within the experience.

For dessert, expect a sharing course of chocolate samosas with mango coulis, syrupy sweet mini balls of gulab jaman and milky saffron falooda shakes. To finish, you’ll be invited to an invigorating masala chai or coffee.

If you’re in the mood for a colourful and quick Diwali dinner, then this is one to add to your list.
