As you would expect when staying in a castle, you’re not going to get access to the same amenities found within a modern newly built hotel. Langley Castle is a Grade I-listed building and has been carefully crafted by its owners to showcase its colourful history.

When staying at Langley, the property is the star and the surrounding history and activities are its supporting cast. Whichever direction you head after leaving the wrought-iron gates at Langley, you’ll discover something interesting to do. We’ve highlighted a few below as a taster.

Hadrian’s Wall
This is one of Britain’s most famous landmarks and has been with us in one form or another for almost 1900 years. The Wall was initially built – and is named after – the Roman Emperor Hadrian to protect the former Roman province of Britannia. Hadrian’s Wall features on many a bucket list and is just a few minutes’ drive from Langley Castle. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and offers far-reaching views over the stunning landscape.

As magical as it is to walk along Hadrian’s Wall by yourselves, some of you might prefer to engage the assistance of a local guide who has in-depth knowledge of the history of the area. If so, book the Roam with the Romans half-day tour. Langley Castle lies close to important points on the Wall, such as Vindolanda Fort and Museum with its excellent collections, Housesteads Fort – a frontier fort, and Chesters Fort – a bathhouse on the frontier. This tour brings the activities of the Romans and the native Celts to life, transporting visitors back to AD122.

Northumberland’s Castles
Thanks to its turbulent past, Northumberland is renowned for having more castles than any other county in England. With more than 70 castle sites, knowing which to visit could prove difficult. Therefore, you might want to consider the full-day, eight-hour tour called Castles of the Coast. This tour will help you explore some of the most famous.

Sightseeing
There are a variety of places to visit in and around Langley Castle, whether you wish to explore the exceptional wonders of Hexham Abbey, head to Carlisle to visit the Tullie House Museum, Carlisle Castle, Carlisle Cathedral and Military Museum, or explore Northumberland’s spectacular coastline, perhaps visiting Lindisfarne. If you are feeling a little more adventurous, a one hour’s drive will take you into Scotland where you can explore the historic town of Gretna Green. Just a forty minute drive east brings you to Newcastle, while a similar length drive to the west brings you to the beautiful Lake District. Here you can board one of the famous Ullswater steamers (boats) and enjoy a clotted cream and jam scone in one of the quaint riverside cafes on Pooley Bridge.

One of England’s greatest driving roads
If you enjoy driving and just want to head off and explore, simply turn right when leaving Langley and follow the A686. This is one of England’s greatest driving roads, taking you through spectacular countryside via twisting country lanes up to an elevation of almost 2000 feet.

Other activities
If the incredible local history isn’t for you, Langley Castle can arrange golf, cycling, fishing, photography and game shooting, as well as a variety of outdoor activities.

Final thoughts
If you’re curious to book a stay in a castle, you’ll be more than satisfied with the Langley experience. The winding staircases, stone walls and period style décor takes your imagination back in time, without having to sacrifice luxury and modern conveniences.

I had an enjoyable and relaxing time, and yes, I would have it on my personal list of best places to stay in Northumberland, but as written in The Saga of Grettir the Strong: “A tale is but half told when only one person tells it”. Langley Castle is a great opportunity for you to create your own tale.
