Online Editor, Simon Wittenberg, heads down to Madison, One New Change’s rooftop restaurant overlooking the London skyline to get into the swing of a Soul Sunday lunch.

Madison is an intimate eatery and bar in the financial heart of London, sitting on the sixth floor of a shopping centre and overlooking some of the City’s iconic landmarks such as The Shard and St Paul’s Cathedral. The “Manhattan-style” restaurant’s latest month-long initiative to draw in the crowds is “Soul Sundays”, which is all about serenading guests with gentle tones sung by talented individuals who have worked alongside some of the world’s most well-known artists.

With the set menu for Soul Sundays, which costs £38 per head, there are four dishes to choose from for each course, and everyone also receives half a bottle of Italian house white or red wine to go with their meal.

A roast sharing board (chicken, pork belly or sirloin) is also on offer for those who wish to indulge in Madison’s gastronomic delights with others for the mains. Dietary requirements are very well catered for if there are any ingredients that need to be substituted or removed, and there’s an open kitchen for those that like to see Madison’s creative talents hard at work.

For the starter, which can also come in the form of rabbit and duck liver terrine or celeriac soup, I settled on the flavoursome mackerel and salmon tartare which was surrounded by a delightful fennel puree and some morsels of pickled root vegetables. My guest decided on the smoked heritage beetroot salad with a deliciously tangy and sweet beetroot ketchup. It was decorated with crunchy brown bread crisps, a dose of pecan nuts and some edible purple flowers for the garnish. Both had given us an excellent first impression.
