Maurice Lacroix Gravity – A Modern Watchmaker’s Masterpiece

Maurice Lacroix Gravity – A Modern Watchmaker’s Masterpiece

To celebrate its 40th anniversary in the watch industry, Swiss watchmaker Maurice Lacroix has upped its ante and produced a limited edition of its highly sought-after timepiece, Gravity.

Aptly named the Masterpiece Gravity 40th, this beautifully crafted and horologically sophisticated timepiece comes in an eye-catching blue dial and possesses the all the qualities like its manufacture movement, a full silicium assortment and two separate dials within the main dial showcasing the hour and minutes all housed within light yet durable POWERLITE case.

This exceptional and highly popular anniversary piece is limited to only 250 pieces and comes in two other variations – one in a white hour and minute dial and the other in a black version. Each of the two variations is also limited to 250 pieces. Completing the trifecta of dials on the watch is an oscillator which is the heart of the watch, beating away and reminding the viewer that time never stands still for anyone. The movement of the pallet lever is as mesmerising as watching the setting sun and hypnotises the wearer with its systematic and reliable beat.

According to Stéphane Waser, the Managing Director of Maurice Lacroix, the company decided to create a dedicated limited edition watch to commemorate the 40th anniversary as an encapsulation of all the features the brand was known for.

Stéphane Waser, the Managing Director of Maurice Lacroix

“Even though forty years is quite a short time, forty years in an industry that is constantly and rapidly advancing is an achievement we can be proud of. It means we have managed to establish ourselves in this industry. This is just the beginning. As the old saying goes ‘Life starts at 40’,” said Waser at the 40th-anniversary celebration held at Maurice Lacroix’s new concept boutique at Starhill Gallery in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia recently.

“We wanted to feature many of the attributes synonymous with Maurice Lacroix. This includes, amongst others, a full silicium assortment and a “POWERLITE” case which are a perfect example of innovation at Maurice Lacroix. This, combined with our watchmaking know-how and design results in the continual development of Maurice Lacroix over the past four decades as one of the most progressive brand in the watchmaking industry.”

The new Masterpiece Gravity 40th is the first timepiece to incorporate a full Silicium assortment, an illustration of the innovation and cutting-edge technology that has gone into the Gravity. Silicium is a self-lubricating and glass-like material which is three times lighter than steel. Because of its low mass, it consumes less energy and does not need regular lubrication. With an automatic manufacture Calibre ML230 and 18,000 vph (2.5 Hz), this frequency is perfectly suited for silicium as its softer rhythm suite silicium’s glass-like qualities better than more vigorous movements.

In terms of aesthetics, the Masterpiece Gravity 40th is definitely easy on the eye. With its pleasing blue lacquered dial which is domed at the centre and secured with two mirrored-polished screws, its diamond-cut index and rhodium-plated hands make this timepiece a stunner and will most certainly elicit admiration from any watch collector or enthusiast. Next to the hour and minutes dials, vertical Côtes de Genèva stripes, accentuated with black GLC treatment give the Gravity an avant-garde look, combining the best of modern Swiss watchmaking technology with an eye-catching design.
