12,000 Years to be Brought to Life at Arundel Castle's Festival of History

Arundel Castle has announced details of its upcoming Festival of History, where visitors of all ages can embark on an immersive 12,000-year journey from the Stone Age to the 20th century. The event will take place over the August bank holiday weekend from Saturday, 24th, to Monday, 26th of August, 2024.

Spread across the lower lawns of the castle, the three-day Festival invites guests to delve deep into the evolution of costumes, weapons, armour, and battle tactics over time. Living history groups and individual interpreters will showcase historical crafts such as forging, cooking, leatherwork, and period crafts, providing a glimpse into the skills and techniques of bygone eras.

The castle’s grounds will come alive with a variety of demonstrations, including bow and gun displays, Saxon, Norman, and Medieval Knights, falconry, Roman Gladiators, and a medieval artillery showcase.

There will also be ample opportunity to participate in hands-on activities such as axe throwing, archery, crossbows, and crafting, ensuring that all ages will be entertained by the interactive experience.

Musicians Myal and Peg will add to the atmosphere of the event with their medieval melodies, and an unmissable event for the youngsters is the renowned Arundel Castle ‘Kids Battle, which provides children with the chance to join in the fun and test their skills. Visitors can also witness a captivating history parade leading to the Grand Melee.

Andrew Lewis, Castle Manager at Arundel Castle, expressed his enthusiasm for the upcoming event, stating, “The Festival of History is a wonderful celebration of human and cultural heritage. We’re thrilled to invite visitors to explore the rich tapestry of history that is perfectly showcased within the castle’s iconic grounds. From thrilling demonstrations to immersive experiences, this event promises to be a real highlight for the family calendar.”

At the Knights’ Table, an abundance of food and drink choices with a medieval twist will be available for visitors to choose from close to the encampment.

Alternatively, guests can select refreshments from the Castle’s café, restaurant or tea terrace or even bring their own picnic to enjoy in the Castle grounds.

Tickets to the Festival of History are available at www.arundelcastle.org and cost from £27 per adult, £12.00 for a child, or £66.00 for a Family Ticket. Children under five can enter for free. Garden-only tickets are not available for this event.

Arundel Castle reserves the right to change events or access to areas at any time. Elements of the planned programme are weather-dependent. All catering is subject to menu and opening hours variations, and availability. Have a go Archery is for over 8’s, and height restrictions may apply.
