Cora Cora Maldives is Green Globe Certified for the 2nd Consecutive Year

The five-star resort has been awarded the coveted Green Globe Certification for the second year running. Cora Cora Maldives remains the only hotel in the Raa Atoll to be Green Globe Certified – a testament to the work and dedication of the resort’s staff to creating and implementing its comprehensive sustainability plan.

Innovation is crucial for sustainability practices to take full effect, and Cora Cora Maldives is constantly thinking of new ways to protect the environment and empower its staff. More recently, the resort addressed major threats to the ocean through a collaborative, multidisciplinary approach using creativity.

As well as using Zero Waste Shampoo, Conditioner, and Body Wash in each of its 100 villas, it has also banned the import of branded bottled water and, instead, filters, mineralises, and bottles their own water free of plastic.

They also use recycled and biodegradable materials in their windsurfing and paddleboarding equipment in partnership with Starboard. The resort has also partnered with Parley for the Ocean to reduce its plastic footprint and ENVIROSWIM to eliminate chlorine usage in their pools.

Green Globe is a global leader in Sustainable Tourism Certification, and they certify hotels, resorts, conference centres, and attractions that are displaying outstanding commitments to environmental sustainability.

Its internationally recognised standard for sustainable tourism is based on 44 sustainability criteria and over 350 indicators that cover Sustainable Management, Corporate Social Responsibility, Cultural Heritage, and Environment.

Being awarded this prestigious accolade indicates that a hotel or resort has demonstrated a firm understanding of its responsibility to protect the environment and has turned this thought into effective action.

“We are fortunate enough to live in a truly glorious part of the world. Our destination is home to several diverse marine and land species, and we recognise that we must play our role to ensure their survival for future generations. Embracing sustainability will not happen overnight. However, we believe it is essential to the long-term growth of our business.” Enthuses Justin Swart, General Manager of Cora Cora Maldives.

“We try to incorporate sustainability into our everyday lives as well as creating a detailed, long-term sustainability agenda. We feel that by doing this, we can achieve a “greener” future much faster. We would like to thank Green Globe for recognising our efforts”.

Alongside the sustainability practices in place at the resort, Cora Cora Maldives also supports external agencies in environmental protection, including the Atoll Marine Centre, through donations for turtle rehabilitation projects.

They are also the sole and official sponsor of CORA, an Olive Ridley Turtle they saved at the resort. After losing both front flippers to a ghost net, the Cora Cora Team treated the turtle and continues supporting his financial recovery.

Cora Cora Maldives sets an example for other five-star resorts in the destination to follow and looks forward to developing its conservation and sustainability programmes to ensure a “greener” tomorrow.
