Dame Judi Dench Visits Araminta Campbell's Edinburgh Atelier

The award-winning BBC TV series Countryfile has filmed esteemed actress Dame Judi Dench and her grandson Sam visiting Araminta Campbell’s atelier, a one-of-a-kind hand-weaving workshop on the outskirts of Edinburgh.

The camera crew captured the moments when Creative Director Araminta Birse-Stewart took Dame Judi Dench and Sam through the design process, inviting them both to try their skills on the vintage George Wood looms.

In the episode, we also hear the stories behind Dame Judi’s choice of colour and thread patterns to reflect her love for trees and birds, the 30 threads to represent her 30 years of marriage with her late husband Michael, and 23 threads to mirror the date of Shakespeare’s death.

In this special edition, Dame Judi expresses an affinity with Scotland and talks of her love for the country, “I would say, actually, that my spiritual home is Scotland, simply because I just feel comfortable here.”

Araminta will weave Dame Judi’s tartan in the days and weeks to come.

Araminta said, “It is always an honour to be asked to create a tartan, but whilst working with Judi, it became clear how much this means to her, which has made the project all the more special”.

You can watch the Countryfile Dame Judi Dench Special on Sunday, 3rd September, at 7:00 pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
