Duffy London Unveils its New Abyss Coffee Table 2023 Edition

It’s always exciting when Duffy London unveils new pieces, and the bespoke furniture makers have once again wowed us with their Abyss Coffee Table 2023 edition, which is, quite simply, a work of art.

Duffy London is known for their skill at expertly combining sculpture into furniture and vice versa. They are the type of company that chooses to ignore boundaries, often playing with the concepts of geography, illusion and gravity in their bespoke pieces, which are made with sustainably sourced woods and other environmentally-friendly materials. The company was founded by Christopher Duffy in 2012 and is based in a studio in Victoria Dock, and it was from here the Abyss furniture concept was born.

About the table
Duffy London’s Abyss Coffee Table 2023 Edition will be limited to only twenty-five pieces and, for the first time, will be available in a premium Italian Carrara Marble. The table’s design plays with light and the layering of materials, which results in a mesmerising three-dimensional canvas that mirrors the colours observed in water at different depths.

The perceived change in colour, starting from the shallows and moving into the deep, gives true meaning and movement to the piece, conjuring ideas of great ocean topography.

Originally designed with a solid base section, the new Abyss Horizon takes on a sleeker, elegant form. The three exquisitely crafted, curved legs support a dramatic, contoured base section. When viewed from above, the topography appears to collapse down into a colossal sinkhole into the floor, whilst the physical space around the edge gives the illusion of the table floating effortlessly above free space.

Christopher Duffy, the founder of Duffy London, said, “This is our most famous concept-based idea to date – I was truly honoured to have a piece acquired by the Louvre in 2019 and wanted to give it a fresh look for 2023. For this piece, I wanted to achieve something very pure. By redesigning the base section with slim legs to give a more graceful profile, we are also helping to focus the attention on the table-top more, resulting in a real wow factor.”

As a design first for Duffy London, the base of the coffee table is now offered in a White Italian Carrara Marble, carved from a single block using the latest CAD technology. The interaction of this medium and blue-tinted glass gives the table a much colder, arctic-like effect, linking to Christopher Duffy’s original inspiration for the table to mirror the depth and aesthetic of icebergs.

Christopher added, “Our new design is the closest yet to achieving the visual effect and original inspiration for the piece. By designing a whole new base section, as well as topography, we were able to open up new ways to manufacture the table in exciting new materials.”

Duffy London’s Abyss designs have already seen great success with renowned brands worldwide, including the Four Seasons Hotel group and Johnnie Walker whisky, and celebrity clients such as Sylvester Stallone and JME – who have all commissioned pieces.
