MOLUS G60 is a Professional Lighting System that Proves Size Doesn't Matter

ZHIYUN is well-known for its innovative and highly capable stabilisers and gimbals. Over the past year or so, the company has expanded its range to include lighting, and one of its most recent developments is the MOLUS G60, a professional light solution housed in a tiny body.

With photography and videography, it’s common to hear the words, “Lighting is everything”. The correct lighting makes a world of difference and can do almost magical things to images and video shoots, such as changing the mood, hiding flaws, creating a focal point and much more.

It’s almost certain that many people reading this will have at one time taken a photograph, thinking it was perfect, only to find later that it wasn’t, and this disappointment has probably been shared by millions who’ve tried to capture a perfect moment on video.

ZHIYUN’s MOLUS G60 system is designed to eliminate these problems as it is small and light enough to carry around with you, and the only extra you’ll need when outdoors is a small power bank.

About the MOLUS G60
The first thing that will surprise most people is the MOLUS G60’s small size. For comparison, those of a certain age should recall the Rubik’s Cube, one of the world’s all-time best-selling toys. Well, the G60’s body is about the same size as the famous puzzle, and it’s also not significantly heavier, weighing a scant 300 grams.

The G60 boasts somewhat of a retro look thanks to the use of white, orange and black, along the same lines as the FIVERAY M40 we tested, and inside has the ‘tried and tested’ DynaVort Cooling System™, with the warm being dispersed via diagonal vents on three sides of the cube.

At the top of the cube is an unmistakable bright orange power button, with two dials to access functions and an LCD screen on its rear.

Although the G60 is simple to use manually, it can also be controlled via an app, which makes things much easier when you’ve mounted the light in a tree, for example. Also, changing the accessories that came with the Combo set we tested (below) couldn’t be simpler; you mount the required diffuser/reflector on the front, twist, and you are ready to go.

The G60 can be powered by the mains (input at the rear) or via a power bank using USB-C (side). Although some might have hoped for an in-built rechargeable battery (which might be forthcoming in the future), adding a battery would significantly increase the size and weight.

Our thoughts
The light being connected to a large diffuserWe tried the light indoors and out (hiking), which performed exactly as we had hoped. The amount of light produced by the G60 is exceptional; in fact, we sometimes found it too powerful and had to keep ‘dialling’ it down.

The most frequent tests we performed were via video calls, and it clearly added a professional touch, and perhaps equally as important, it never proved to be a distraction.

The set provided to us for this review came with a large, good-quality bag/case along with a variety of diffusers and a handy mini-tripod.

Although the smart-looking case the light set came with is designed to take pretty much everything, we find that ‘less is more’ when heading out into the countryside, so we opted to use the mesh bag to house the G60, the domed silicon diffuser, the mini-tripod and a power bank, all of which added hardly any weight on our hikes.

Overall, we were delighted with how well the MOLUS G60 performed and based on our needs; we couldn’t fault it (which we should add is not our aim). For photographers and content creators who are on the move, it would be a valuable addition to their kit bags.

ZHIYUN’s development team has put a great deal of thought into this lighting set-up, and for its size, we look upon it as the perfect super-portable professional lighting solution.
