Simon Wittenberg takes a look at Royal Salute’s fourth addition to the Polo collection, the 21-Year-Old Polo Estancia Edition, which is the brand’s first blend to be fully finished in Argentinian Malbec wine casks.
Royal Salute’s Polo Collection debuted back in 2017 with the Polo Edition, followed by the Beach Polo Edition a year later, and the Snow Polo Edition in 2019, with the latter drawing its inspiration from the winter sport played in St Moritz.
After a two-year hiatus, the latest and fourth addition to this revered portfolio of limited edition 21-year-old blends is the Polo Estancia Edition, which pays homage to Argentina, known universally as the “home of polo”. The meaning of “Estancia” is a large, private plot of land in South America used for farming, cattle-raising, or indeed, for playing polo.
This expression, another work of art by Royal Salute’s Master Blender Sandy Hyslop, appeals to both whisky and wine lovers alike, thanks to the use of the finest Malbec wine casks from Argentina, and is, in fact, the first Royal Salute Scotch whisky to be finished using these barrels.
The result is an exceptional whisky that is velvety, full-bodied and luxuriously fruity, offering those who purchase the Polo Estancia Edition hints of raspberry and blackberry compote. This is all complemented by notes of gently spiced cinnamon, plum jam and indulgent dark chocolate ginger sweets.
Sandy Hyslop said that, for this unique expression, they were able to perfectly integrate the robust and highly recognisable flavours of Malbec wine casks with their rich whiskies, all aged for a minimum of 21 years a task that requires constant care and attention.
He added that the Polo Estancia Edition is an exceptional blend resulting from this bold marriage, where only the finest Malbec wine casks from Argentina were used for final maturation.
The new whisky is housed in a beautiful sunset red 70cl porcelain flagon with gold detailing and a golden summit, whilst the stunning gift box housing the expression is just as impressive. It features magnificent artwork depicting the side-lines of a polo match and the Argentinian polo lifestyle.
As an added endorsement of why whisky aficionados should reach for a dram of Royal Salute’s Polo Estancia Edition, the illustration came complete with the insignia of Malcolm Borwick, the long-standing World Polo Ambassador and celebrated polo player who we had the pleasure of meeting in Rome a couple of years ago.
