With the earth’s natural resources feeling the strain, some thinking ‘outside of the box’ is required. This is exactly what Granby Workshop is doing by creating a new range of ceramic tableware made entirely from waste materials.
We love hearing stories about innovation and experimentation particularly when it addresses one of the major problems – wastage. Liverpool-based Granby Workshop has created something brilliant. A range of ceramic tableware made from the millions of tonnes of waste that ends up in landfill sites each year.
How this Granby Workshop project came to fruition
The idea for the range was borne from extensive research, gathering, testing and analysing materials from a wide range of post-consumer and industrial waste streams including ceramic, glass, and stone waste.
A selection of colours and finishes have been produced by drawing out specific qualities in each waste stream. To ensure that all aspects of the ceramic range utilise waste products, the main clay body uses industrial manufacturing wastewater. For the final finish, the glaze’s melt is produced by adding recycled laboratory glassware.
The silky smooth surface comes from crushed magnesia-rich refractory bricks. And, the colour is derived from crushed tiles and broken dinnerware.
How to see the Granby Workshop tableware
In conjunction with the London Design Festival, the workshop is holding a pop-up shop in Coal Drops Yard from the 18th to the 22nd September. To fund the project, they’re turning to Kickstarter with the aim to raise £50,000.
At the Coal Drops Yard, the workshop will be showcasing the complete range. In addition, numerous examples of the tests and experiments that fed into its development. If you can’t wait, an exclusive range of prototypes and one-off pieces will be available for sale at the pop-up.
