Bermuda's 2024 Lineup of Sporting Events Makes it an Active Traveller's Paradise

Known for its mysterious ‘triangle’ and its incredible shipwrecks, which provide extraordinary diving opportunities, the island of Bermuda has become a haven for active travellers. In 2024, on top of its unparalleled diving and snorkelling options, it has some fantastic sporting events in store, which we’ll be looking into in this feature.

Below, we look at some of the exciting sporting events Bermuda has lined up in 2024, which is putting on the fast track to being a one-stop-shop for sporting fanatics.

January | Chubb Bermuda Triangle Challenge
The incredible Chubb Bermuda Triangle Challenge spans three days, each with a different event taking place against a spectacular backdrop. This 13.1-mile course will start and finish on Front Street in Hamilton.

Participants will enjoy many breathtaking vistas of Bermuda’s South and North coasts, combining views of the changing shades of the blue ocean with the bright hues of pastel-coloured houses and buildings. Mixed into this are areas of lush greenery and fascinating architecture.

The Bermuda Marathon will be run at the same time as the Bermuda Half Marathon, with the Bermuda Marathon runners completing two laps of the Bermuda Half Marathon course.

April | Dive Month
Underwater explorers will flock to the island for Dive Month to dive at Bermuda’s 300 shipwrecks, a true diver’s paradise. Dive shops and the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute will host a series of events with special rates to entice adventurers to uncover what lies beneath the surface.

Among the best shipwrecks to explore are the famous Cristobal Colón, The Constellation & Montana and the Mary Celestia, all of which draw in travellers far and wide looking for one of the most extraordinary underwater adventures on the planet.

May | Antigua Bermuda Race, SailGP & USATF Bermuda Grand Prix
As Bermuda continues to claim its spot on the international sailing stage, May will see the prestigious Antigua Bermuda Race and SailGP, held in conjunction with Antigua Sailing Week. SailGP involves high-speed racing, with elite sailing athletes making use of the latest technology in the industry to showcase their skills in this incredible sporting competition.

June | Newport Bermuda Race
Newport Bermuda Race will unfurl across 635 miles on 21st June 2024, organised by the Bermuda Race Foundation. Founded in 1906, this race draws in thousands of sailing enthusiasts from around the world to take on the challenge of the open ocean, navigating towards St. David’s Lighthouse.

August | Bermuda Cup Match
The Cup Match is one of the biggest celebrations of the year in Bermuda. A two-day cricket match between rival teams, Somerset Cricket Club and St. George’s Cricket Club, brings the entire island together in celebration of Emancipation every year.

This cricket bonanza brings with it some healthy competition among locals but also many festivities and vibrant celebrations. Local Cuisine is an integral part of the festival atmosphere; local delicacies like fried fish, conch, mussel and beef pies are all part of the package.

Families deck out their “camps” on the match grounds, each carrying a feeling of its own – an infectious, unforgettable festival spirit – if you’re lucky enough to be invited inside. At the game, fashions are coordinated around team colours – red and dark blue for Somerset, light blue and dark blue for St. George’s.

At the same time, the Bermuda Golf Cup, part of the World Match Racing Tour, offers another chance to wow viewers with its world-class sailing racing just off Hamilton Harbour.

November | Butterfield Bermuda Championship & North American Rally Caribbean
Held at the scenic Port Royal Golf Course, the prestigious Butterfield Bermuda Championship is part of the PGA TOUR event held at the destination each year.

The Robert Trent Jones-designed professional golf tournament involves some of golf’s biggest hitters, who will gather on the island in 2024 to compete, providing yet another opportunity for active travellers to plan a sports-themed trip in Bermuda’s idyllic surroundings.
