Brandon Ralph to Fly the Flag at the Hôtel Barrière Le Carl Gustaf Saint-Barth

As one of the partners for Art Week 2022, the Hotel Barrière Le Carl Gustaf will be shining the spotlight on art and the USA this November by hosting works from the photographer and Leica Ambassador Brandon Ralph in an exhibition titled Fly the Flag.

From 22 to 29 November, the Hotel Barrière Le Carl Gustaf is inviting guests to see America through the lens of photographer, and Leica Ambassador, Brandon Ralph. The five-star St Barts destination plays host to Fly the Flag, an exhibition dreamt up by the New York artist, showcasing his native country, roots, values, and the star-spangled banner.

For Fly the Flag, Brandon Ralph explores three different disciplines. The project comprises a film installation of five vignettes, each lasting around sixty seconds, original sculptures representing different US flags fluttering in the wind, and black and white photography.

Taken from The American Experiment, the photographer’s first monograph and the fruit of ten years’ work, the remarkable shots provide an insight into contemporary America and the minds of those living there.

Each of Brandon’s images provides a different facet of the American identity, gradually tracing the portrait of a nation so pluralistic that it is rendered singular.

The meeting of the New Yorker and the luxury hotel owed nothing to chance. With Brandon Ralph being one of the guest artists for Art Week and Le Carl Gustaf one of the event partners, it was always going to happen.

Brandon said, “The American flag is arguably one of the most recognisable symbols in the world, and I am thrilled to bring this exhibit to an international community. When I discovered that I would be presented at the Carl Gustaf, I was excited because it is both grand and intimate, which fits perfectly with this body of work.”

Launched in 2019 by the Saint-Barthelemy Territorial Tourism Committee and Artists of Saint Barth, an association set up by Emmanuel Leprince to promote artists inspired by the Caribbean island, the cultural event has enjoyed growing success among the public and artists alike. Evidence of this is proven by the quality of the eight exhibitions on the programme for the 2022 edition.
