NH Collection Maldives Havodda Resort Unveils New Sustainability Initiatives

NH Collection Maldives Havodda Resort is an upscale all-villa hideaway on a pristine, palm-tree-blanketed island on the Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll. Since opening, the resort has implemented a series of measures to ensure minimal environmental impact. Today, it has unveiled new plans to make it even more sustainable ahead of World Earth Day on 22 April.

The five-star Maldives Havodda Resort opened in 2023 and has been implementing sustainability initiatives to help reduce its environmental impact since then. Some of these projects will be developed further and added to in 2024.

Among the new schemes will be a focus on protecting turtle nesting sites and plans for new solar water heaters, which will deepen the resort’s sustainability commitment for the years ahead.

The hotel’s existing and future initiatives are divided into four key areas – environmental and animal conservation, energy efficiency, sustainable produce and waste management:

Environmental and Animal Conservation
In a new project for 2024, sea turtle nesting sites will be protected along the island’s coastline. Sections of the sands known to be popular nesting areas will be cordoned off to conserve the turtle’s habitats, helping to protect the endangered species. Meanwhile, guests will continue to have the opportunity to get involved with the resort’s environmental conservation efforts, including its existing tree planting programme that helps to minimise carbon emissions.

Energy Efficiency
Also new for 2024, the sun-kissed resort will implement solar water heaters, which will run alongside its existing eco-efficient heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system. This, paired with the resort’s LED lighting set-up, will significantly contribute to energy efficiency.

Sustainable Produce
The resort’s hydroponic garden – where plants are grown sustainably in piping, without the use of soil and using recycled water – and its zero-waste garden, which embraces ecological design and is plastic-free, organic and as animal-friendly as possible, will continue to grow throughout 2024, offering guests fresh produce cultivated on site.

Waste Management
Existing sustainability-focused waste management schemes will continue this year, including organic material and kitchen waste decomposition processes. These processes produce compost for use in the resort’s gardens and grounds as organic fertiliser. Any excess compost is donated to the neighbouring community, further reinforcing the resort’s commitment to the local environment.

An on-site water bottling plant is also in place, eliminating the need for single-use plastic bottles and ensuring quality and sustainable drinking water for guests and staff.
