Hexagon Classic Design is launching its latest interior installation, focusing on the theme – The Dark Side of the Moon and featuring some of the most iconic artists and up-and-coming designers.

Running from now until January 30th, the exhibition continues Hexagon’s philosophy of mixing the world’s most amazing classic cars with art and design and is located in its classic car showroom in north London.

Featuring three ceramicists, two sculptors and a lighting designer, the moon is the main theme dedicated to each of the contemporary works from the artists on display at Hexagon Classic Design.

Ceramic artist Abigail Simpson has been catalogued in two post-war British Art Auctions at Christie’s which have earned her international reputation. Simpson’s sculpture at Hexagon Classic Design comes to life as vessels, dark and mysterious in their form.

“For several years, the theme of the vessel has been constant in all my work. During that time I have attempted to develop every aspect of its physical possibilities. In terms of ‘engineering the form’, these objects have moved through architectural stages, sometimes resembling entirely non-functional columns as well as retaining their status as vessels.” – Abigail Simpson

Hexagon Classic Design is proud to display this work alongside the voluptuously curved and strikingly finishes from master glazer Albert Montserrat’s large moon jars, which are placed alongside the fluid, generous curves with deep recesses developed from the talented James Oughtibridge, all drawing the eye to follow contours.

Continuing the elemental theme of the exhibition is sculptors Andrea Geile and Dominic Welch. Geile uses Corten steel for a sculpture that stands alone or integrates into the landscape, whilst Welch works in stone, creating large sensuous works, curved and tactile which reflect the contours of the moon.

Also on display at Hexagon Classic Design is a diverse range of lighting from Italian specialists Catellani and Smith. Moonlike, both in shape and light quality, the installations cast light and shade on their surroundings and represent sculpture in its truest form.

There is also a pop-up shop of Scandinavian furniture featuring a timeless selection of chairs, including iconic Wishbone chairs, from the distinguished Carl Hansen & Son. In addition to the practical shelving systems from String and furniture from Swedish-based Källemo.

The Dark Side of the Moon exhibition sits alongside Hexagon Classics – a long-established hub for the finest classic cars. Time has proved that beautiful design of today is the classic of the future. This is no less the case with the classic beauty of the works in this exhibition. Classic design is the appreciation of what’s special today with the knowledge that its integrity will live on in the future.

Racheline Michaels, Hexagon Classic Design curator, said: “We are very privileged to bring such a vast array of artists into our Dark Side of the Moon exhibition. Embarking on this requires confidence in the pieces that we actually could live with. The sheer quality of the work in the showroom boasts materials which have their own imperfections and patina, something which evokes the same kind of emotional response as owning a classic car.

“Hexagon Classic Design has a strong belief in the power of beauty and design. It captures the zeitgeist – believing that living in an environment of beauty, of harmonious design representing the work of the individual who has taken care and pride in its creation, lifts the spirits and gives one a feeling of well being, individuality and joy.”
