We Test the Hoover HF9 Anti-Twist Cordless Pet Vacuum Cleaner

We love reviewing the latest vacuum cleaners here at Luxurious Magazine. This time, Leanne Kelsall tries out the Hoover HF9 Cordless Pet Vacuum Cleaner. It certainly had its work cut out in Leanne’s flat, with two long-haired cats and renovations taking place. So how did it perform? Let’s see.

Who is Hoover?
The Hoover brand has been around since the 1900s and is the brainchild of a janitor and inventor called Murray Spangler.

Spangler had an asthma problem and used his creativity to find a solution to the dust that aggravated his asthma as he swept up in the evenings. He began experimenting with everyday objects until he created the first electric vacuum cleaner – the “suction sweeper,” as he called it.

W.H. “Boss” Hoover bought the patent for the sweeper from Spangler in 1908, keeping him on as a partner. And so, Hoover was born.

What is the Hoover HF9 Anti-Twist Cordless Pet?
The Hoover HF9 is a cordless vacuum cleaner with Anti-Twist technology. Anti-Twist is a special comb behind the brush that stops hairs from getting tangled in the roller.

There are three HF9 models. The version I tried is the Pet edition., which benefits from an extra motorised power nozzle designed to pick up the stubborn cat and dog hair from your sofa, cushions and other soft furnishings.

I found the Hoover HF9 Cordless Pet to be slim and lightweight at 3.4kgs (that’s lighter than my small cat), and I liked that it was bagless and easy to empty. Though not the largest, the 0.7L bin empties at the touch of a button.

A close-up look at the LED display on the vacuum cleaner

There’s a modern LED display with simple-to-use modes for hard floors and carpets. The screen also tells you how many minutes of power you have left, a feature I found very useful.

The vacuum being used to clean a chair in handheld mode

The Hoover can also transform into a handheld vacuum, making it super-easy if you want to give your stairs, sofa or car a once-over. I found this helpful in picking up crumbs and cat biscuits throughout the week.

Special features

Hoover’s Anti-Twist technology – a special comb behind the brush – is a revelation in vacuum maintenance. It radically reduces the number of hairs getting caught, making maintenance quick and easy. Removing the roller when you need to clear it out only takes a few seconds. It was a big selling point for me as I have long hair that I like to style, and an excellent time-saver compared to manually freeing hair from the roller with scissors.

The vacuum head dismantled for cleaning

Suction power is another unique selling point of the Hoover HF9 Cordless Pet Vacuum Cleaner. It charges fully in 3.5 hours which is slightly faster than the average cordless vacuum. One full charge will give you over 30 minutes of cleaning which is plenty enough for a full cleaning of a small flat like mine.

The best part, though, is that the HF9 Pet doesn’t lose suction as the battery life reduces. It remains just as powerful as when fully charged, which is something I’ve not come across in a cordless vacuum before. According to Hoover, the suction is “twice as powerful as Shark’s best-selling cordless vacuum”. Having tried the vacuum, I have no doubt that’s true.

The Hoover clipped into a mounting for flat storage on a wall

One of the features I enjoyed most about the Hoover HF9 Pet is the ability to park it anywhere. It stands on its own in the upright position. This comes in handy if you need to quickly stop vacuuming for things like answering the door or taking a phone call. Plus, with it being so lightweight and slim, wherever you leave it, it barely takes up any
space.

How did it perform?
The Hoover HF9 Pet arrived in a compact and 100% recyclable cardboard box. Even the ink on the box is biodegradable. So it impressed me from the start.

My first impressions were that I thought the vacuum felt well made and everything fit together easily.

It made vacuuming a pleasure – which is not something I thought I’d ever say about a household chore. It really took the hassle out of cleaning my flat, which was full of boxes and tools having just moved in. The HF9 was comfortable to hold and gilded around each room effortlessly, taking obstacles in its stride.

All the controls are right where your hand is, so I found myself switching between modes effortlessly.

The vacuum effortlessly switching between carpet and hard flooring

The flooring in my flat is solid wood and tile. However, I found the HF9 really came into its own on softer surfaces, like our rugs and chairs. I can only imagine how powerful it’d be on the carpet. Whilst we are on the topic, with the Carpet mode, the brush bar spins faster than on Hard Floor mode, picking up dust from deep beneath the surface.

The LED lights working in a dark area of the room

Though seemingly a cool extra, the LED lights are actually extremely helpful. They illuminated hair or dust I would’ve missed, and I found them especially useful when vacuuming in the evening and for highlighting hard-to-reach areas.

Lastly, because the bin isn’t the largest, you do need to be on the ball when it comes to emptying the vacuum cleaner.

When I was first getting to grips with the HF9, I kept getting an error message, and this was simply because I needed to empty it more. It’s best to empty the cleaner after every use; although it’s an extra chore, it is straightforward enough with a simple touch of a button.

Final word
If you’re looking for an affordable cordless pet vacuum that gives you practicality and power, you won’t be disappointed by the Hoover HF9.

It boasts strong suction and innovative features, such as the lights and the ability to park it anywhere. This sets it apart from other cordless models on the market. It’s best suited to smaller homes or for day-to-day light cleaning of larger homes, and it’s especially effective for homes with carpet.
